Constant Air Volume Regulators

A Constant Air Volume (CAV) Regulator is a passive, mechanical device designed to maintain a precise, pre-set airflow rate within ductwork, regardless of variations in static pressure. Unlike automated Variable Air Volume (VAV) systems, CAV regulators operate without external power or controls. The key to their operation is an internal diaphragm or control mechanism that adjusts its position in response to changes in static pressure. If pressure increases, the mechanism slightly closes to increase resistance, holding the volumetric airflow constant. If pressure drops, it opens slightly to maintain the set rate. CAV Regulators are highly valued for their simplicity, reliability, and low maintenance needs. They are commonly used in exhaust systems, dedicated outdoor air supply (DOAS) ventilation, and small zones where precise, consistent air delivery is critical for thermal comfort, indoor air quality, or code compliance, without the complexity of electronic controls.
