Variable Air Volume Regulators

A Variable Air Volume (VAV) Regulator, commonly known as a VAV box, is an electronically controlled terminal unit that regulates the airflow to a specific thermal zone. VAV regulators precisely adjust the quantity of conditioned supply air delivered to match the zone’s real-time cooling or heating demands. Unlike simpler CAV systems, VAV regulators use internal dampers connected to a direct digital control system. They modulate the damper position based on continuous feedback from a zone temperature sensor, thereby varying the airflow volume. This dynamic adjustment is the key to optimizing both comfort and energy consumption across the building. VAV Regulators are the standard choice for modern commercial and large institutional HVAC systems, particularly in multi-zone applications. By reducing airflow when a zone requires less cooling, they drastically cut down on fan energy usage and improve occupant comfort, making them fundamental components of high-efficiency building designs.
