Fire Resistant Grilles
Fire Resistant Grilles are specialized ventilation components designed for installation in fire-rated partitions, walls, and doors to maintain the compartmentation integrity of a building. Unlike standard grilles that provide airflow, these devices are engineered to automatically block fire and heat transfer, preserving the structure's passive fire protection strategy. These grilles utilize intumescent technology. Under normal conditions, they allow necessary airflow for comfort and system operation. However, when exposed to high temperatures, the intumescent material rapidly expands, forming a dense, fire-resistant foam or char that seals the entire aperture. This expansion effectively stops the passage of flames and hot gasses for a rated period, typically 30, 60, or 120 minutes. The installation of fire resistant grilles is essential for ensuring building safety compliance, particularly where ventilation is required in fire separation elements. By providing a reliable, active barrier against fire spread, they are a critical element in compartmentation strategies, protecting occupants and property and ensuring the integrity of the overall HVAC and fire safety design.
