Sound Attenuators
A sound attenuator, or HVAC silencer, is a passive device designed to reduce airborne noise transmitted through ducts, walls, or mechanical equipment casings. These essential components prevent noise generated by fans, Air Handling Units (AHUs), and airflow from disrupting occupied building spaces. Attenuators operate using a splitter system—a series of perforated baffles packed with sound-absorbing materials like mineral wool or fiberglass. As air passes through the narrow passages, the acoustic energy of the noise is absorbed and dissipated, significantly reducing the transmitted noise while maintaining necessary airflow and static pressure levels. They are mandatory for achieving stringent acoustic standards in commercial offices, theaters, recording studios, hospitals, and educational facilities. Selecting the correct attenuator is critical to ensuring occupant comfort and regulatory compliance without compromising the HVAC system's aerodynamic performance.
